If I’ve learned anything from playing video games it is this: shortly after the earth is ravaged by H1N1 we will be hit by the outbreak of yet another virus that will reanimate dead tissue and pave the way for the invasion of the zombie pig people. I’m working on a list of witty one-liners to use as I slaughter the hog-like harbingers of doom. So far all I got is “Ebedy-ebedy-that’s all folk!”.

Embedded Developer requisitions often request or require an “understanding of Linux”. This always raises the question, “Do they want someone who can develop on a desktop running Linux or develop an embedded product running Linux?”
To those that don’t understand, let me elaborate. I am an “embedded” software developer. That means I write computer programs, but not for desktop or laptop PCs. Rather, I use a desktop PC to write programs that are loaded onto devices that have computers in them like cell phones and medical devices. Learning enough Linux to build programs is easy. It takes much more effort to understand enough about Linux to use it in an embedded device. The job qualification isn’t clear how Linux is used or how familiar a candidate should be.

The end of our last family holiday gathering concluded with a cut-throat game of Settlers of Catan between the Sheppards and the Shaffers. No surprise, I brought home the gold. Settlers of Catan has been my favorite board game since I discovered the game 2 years ago. The only trouble is finding people to play with. I decided to summarize the rules while showing exactly how the game is designed to maximize everyone’s fun. Maybe I can win a few new fans. However, I must warn you. You won’t find this game in Walmart next to Milton Bradley’s greatest hits. Settlers of Catan is the breakaway hit generated by “independent games”. A special breed of geeks develops cultish followings many independent games which are often kept in a corner of your local comic book store. However, just as Star Wars has more mainstream appeal than Battlefield Earth, Catan has earned a spot on the shelfs at Target and some bookstores due to the recognition it received for the many awards it has won throughout the world.

The game board is a large island made of different hex shaped tiles. Each type of tile is associated with geography and that geography’s natural resource. Forests produce wood. Mountains produce ore. Dice rolls determine which tiles produce resources and players with towns next to those tiles collect the corresponding resource. This means that at the opening of each player’s turn, any player is likely to get new resources. Players return their resources in order to build more towns which must be connected by roads. Everyone is encouraged to trade in order to get the combination of resources they need. No one plays a mere spectator between turns. There is always something to keep players attention.

The game punishes people that hoard cards, further motivating players to trade in order to gain what they need. When any player rolls a 7, anyone hoarding more than 7 resource cards must discard half their hand. That player must also move the “robber”. The robber is a figure on the board. The hex tile he resides on is incapable of producing resources even if the number of the tile is rolled. The tile can produce resources only after the robber is moved again. Players can move the robber by playing “army” cards they draw from a deck of utility cards that can be purchased with their resources. This is one of the few means players can attempt to block another player’s path to victory.

No one enjoys playing a game when failure is certain and slow. Settlers of Catan avoids that problem in three ways. First, there are many different ways to win the game. The goal is to earn 10 victory points. Victory points are earned in many different ways. Points are awarded for towns. Certain utility cards the players can purchase award victory points. Two points are awarded for maintaining the longest road or the largest army. Largest army refers to the player who has played the most army cards during the game. The variety of means helps to avoid situations where players have no means to win. Chances are likely there is some way a player can word towards victory points.

Second, the social aspect of the game levels the playing field. Players are unwilling to trade with players on the cusp of winning. They are much more willing to trade with people they don’t see as threatening. Hence, those far behind progress quickly and others stall just before victory.

Just as a slow demise is frustrating, large swings in the score make for an exciting game. Yet too many swings can make the game seem too random. As you may recall, players can invoke a 4 point swing by building the largest road or army, both of which are fairly cheap. A 4 point swing can reduce a hefty lead like 8 – 4 to a mere tie.

Have I earned your interest? If so, go buy a copy and share it with your friends. Folks with an Xbox can play a version in the on-line arcade. Give me a call when you find time. I’m always up for a game.

My blog muse has stepped out for a bit so I’ve been filled my spare time under the hood of the website. I’ve hammered out the start of an archives page and mapped out some other ideas. I’m exploring ways I can quickly publish lists of the little gems I find on the web. Nearly all of them come through my RSS feeds, so Google’s “shared items” feed is a simple solution. I can’t seem to extract and reformat the links featured in the feed somewhere on this site, but this link should do the trick for people looking for a quick distraction.

I’m changing domains in an effort to save cash. Back in 2002 ICANN created a new domain intended to cater to personal content, like blogs (which had just begun to rise in popularity at the turn of the century). The new domain’s goal was preventing the abuse older domains endured, like “cyber-squatting”. Registers had have to submit proof of their identity, and would only be allowed to register a domain representing their name.

I quickly snatched up “chris.sheppard.name”, even though I had to register for it through a less than reputable company. Although the new top-level domain preservers, the rules that protected it proved unpopular. ICANN recovered from their mistake by opening the remaining .name domains, freeing them from the unpopular policies.

This is where things get confusing. I own “chris.sheppard.name”, not “sheppard.name”. The former is tied to the troublesome policies, making it impossible to transfer to a decent register. The later is easy to transfer, if it weren’t already registered by someone else. Hence, I’ve registered “sheppardfamily.name”, an unfettered .name domain hosted by the very economical NearlyFreeSpeech.net.

The savings? $27 each year.

Glen Larson, the creator and producer of the original series, is a devout Mormon and many of the concepts in both the old and newer series are grounded in Mormon theology. This FAQ points out 7 parallels, many from the original series. The last page of this article on Salon is much more interesting. Look for the sub-title, “What’s this all this confusing religious stuff?” I’m not sure the part of the article I quoted below is firmly grounded in Mormon doctrine, but it sure is interesting:

The Cylons, unlike the humans, are monotheistic and believe in “one true God.” Humanity, in their view, has forsaken God and, thus, sinned. So God directed humanity to create the Cylons. In order to please their God, the Cylons then murdered their creators.

The next two sub-sections in the article also include astute observations. They talk about how Cylons are a young culture. They have evolved from a “unified front” into individuals with independent agendas. It connects their obsession with flesh and Earth and reproduction with the religious commandment, “be fruitful”. And here I was thinking they were written to be oversexed robots to appeal to an undersexed audience.

I dunno when I’ll be able to post again. You see, the boys are getting the band back together. Old farts like myself like few things better than sharing our music with the younger generation. I learned from the best, Dana Carvey. Now I must teach my children not just how to hit the notes, but play them with style. We shoot notes from the hip, jump with the rhythm and we work the whammy bar like it was …well, you know. Tonight the kids and I rocked out to Even Flow, Paint it Black, My Name is Jonas and La Grange. I only wish the disc had some Limozeen bonus tracks. My old lady, she isn’t too keen on the release of Guitar Hero 3. She says it keeps me out on the road too long. I think I may have to write her a power ballad. She’s been spending her free time working on a new video game concept, “Back Massage Hero”. You lay a thin game pad on your partner’s back and you have to squeeze and rub certain areas in time with the music. I can’t wait for her to try it out on me. Oh wait, she’s giving me the stink eye. I better go.

…anyone know where I can get some lazer lights for our living room on the cheap?

I followed the link and was greeted by a childhood terror I had long forgotten about, the salt vampire. I had no interest in the show itself. I just happened to glance at the screen when Kirk had kissed some hot space cadet and morphed into Greedo’s homely grandmother. The exact image featured in Wired was imprinted in my brain and was brought to mind anytime the lights went out.

Discover Magazine ran a contest for the best 2 minute video that explained basics behind String Theory. The winner is titled String Ducky. I think the narrator may be Dexter’s real-life seester, not to be confused with steupid Dee Dee. I just learned of the results this morning, which is quite a coincidence given our recent dinner conversations. The video reminded me of another scientific short I enjoyed. It is a 10 minute video promoting a book titled Imagining the Tenth Dimension. The video does a fantastic job illustrating the lower dimensions and gracefully moves to describe what it higher dimensions might entail. It concludes by explaining how the author believes this fits into popular variations of String Theory.

Yesterday Valve released The Orange Box, a collection of 6 games for a mere $50. The game includes 3 segments of the Half-Life 2 story, an innovative first person puzzle game called Portal and the sequel to the first team-based first person shooter game I can recall, Team Fortress 2. It would be a crime to turn down such a spectacular collection, especially since I did not own any of them. I pre-ordered the package so Valve granted me an additional 10% discount and access to TF2 beta tests nearly a month before the game was released. (The married man must manage his gaming budget with great care.)

I never expected I would neglect the first 2 weeks of the beta playing Peggle Extreme, the last game included in the series. The game is hardly worth mentioning among so many distinguished and promising titles. It seems to have been included as an after thought; regarded as a sort of Cracker-Jack prize. Peggle centers around a set of blue and orange bouncy pegs. The object is to touch all the orange pegs with a pinball that is launched from the top of the screen. I’ve learned that my computer lacks such simple pleasures. I threw down an additional $10 for the complete version of the game, Peggle Deluxe. Later I learned I am not the only one that finds value in cheap, simple “casual” games. It wasn’t long before I turned my attention back to TF2, but I still start up Peggle when I have a few minutes to spare between obligations around the house.

This is the story of a boy. Although this boy was content, he was not truly happy. He was different than the rest of his family. He yearned for the comfort of someone he could relate to. He was so different from his parents and siblings, he suspected he may have been adopted. In an effort to find true happiness, the boy spent his spare time hunting for his real life parents.

As the months past, his parents grew concerned regarding the boy’s happiness. They did all they could to please him. They only served his favorite meals and tucked him in like a little burrito every night. They even brought home a young basset hound puppy named Gracie. Gracie fell hopelessly in love with the young boy. He fed her dog treats. They chased each other around the house. He would rub her belly and she licked his face. The boy and his dog were inseparable.

Two years later the boy located his true parents! They were both super-vegetarian-cyber-ninja-spies that fought for justice in the game Runescape. They were more than mere administrators. The pair owned a unique device that digitally transported them into the game world. They asked him to come live with them, so they might train him to follow in their super-vegetarian-cyber-ninja-spy footsteps. He turned to tell his old family he had to leave them, but Gracie did not seem to understand. She turned her big head and said “Rooowr?”

He turned to the other family to consider what he might gain there. They told him he would have to play lots of Runescape if he were to become a super-vegetarian-cyber-ninja-spy. He may even need to neglect his homework for the good of the realm! He looked back at Gracie. She stuck her rear in the air and called back to him “Wroff! Wroff! ….Rrruff!”

His newly discovered father touched his shoulder and pointed out that they had a strict diet of cheese and bread. They could not stand to see an animal hurt. Just then Gracie pounced the young boy and slathered her tongue all over his face. Her tail emphatically swung to and fro. Just then his super-vegetarian-cyber-ninja-spy parents understood.

“Son”, his newly discovered mother began, “We can’t bare to see this dog emotionally hurt through your absence, yet we don’t have time to take care of her–with all the player killers and hackers we bring to justice. You must stay here and tend to this noble beast. This is for the best. I suspect nothing we might offer you could replace the love Gracie has for you.” He gave her a short nod. As his newly discovered parents drove off in their tofumobile, his mother leaned out the side and called out to him, promising to write often.

The boy and his dog were truly happy.

An RPG video game is not much more than a dungeon romp with plenty of opportunities to accessorize. A massively-multiplayer on-line game (MMO) places that much more emphasis on fashion. Yesterday Blizzard released the designs for the tier-6 armor sets–the newest, most powerful equipment sets in the game. Players must travel back in time and defeat Archimonde, Field Commander of the Burning Legion at the Battle of Mount Hyjal in order to earn these rewards. Advocates and ex-junkies alike must admit, it is fun to see what new looks Blizzard’s design team have conjured up.

The whole Sheppard clan have pitched in to help trim the family budget. Noah volunteered to take public swimming lessons in lieu of private lessons. Madison decided to spend most of her time at her new BFF’s home. Elise agreed to purchase her entire 2007 office wardrobe at the local Goodwill store. What could I do to contribute? It occurred to me I had not played World of Warcraft since April. I decided buy a one-way griffin ride from Stormwind to the real world.

But what will happen to the characters I’ve helped grow these past years? Phifer has taken an extended sabbatical at the Northshire Abbey. She leads Sunday School, participates in choir and recently joined the abbey’s weekly wine tasting club. Cinch has become Iron Forge’s leading alarm expert in Iron Forge. When she finds the time, she likes to get away to Booty Bay where she ganks low level horde. Awaka spends most of her time hiking in Nagrand, communing with nature and whatnot. Vlock is still being corpse camped by a Gnome rogue, deep in Stranglethorn. Jerk.

The thought of world domination strikes a pleasant chord within Young Noah. He enjoys tales of the British Empire and would happily discuss Germany’s failed attempts to expand their borders. He is also drawn to games where he takes the role of an ambitious conquerer. Risk embellished his diplomatic and military dreams. A few days ago I introduced him to Sid Meyer’s Civilization III. It is exponentially more detailed, allowing him to cater to domestic needs and opening a variety of non-military diplomatic options. He debates the merits of monarchy and republic. He warns me how Otto Von Bismark is cranky, unreasonable and quick to declare war. He explains how difficult it is to fight a war on two fronts.

The game tries to incorporate as many historical concepts as it can. His interest always starts with the game but immediately extends into the historical significance. Let me list a few examples. The game progresses through 4 different eras of civilization: Stone Age, Medieval Times, Industrial Age and Modern Age. It was the first he had heard of the Industrial Age, which prompted many questions. We talked about the social structure of the Medieval Times. We talked about German Panzer Tanks, Roman Legionaries, and the Zulu Nation. Each civilization races to be the first to construct “wonders” that bestow special benefits to that nation. He began to explore the history and importance of the Egyptian pyramids, the Great Wall of China and the Sistine Chapel. The historical significance wouldn’t be important if he were just playing the game to win, but Noah has stumbled upon something more. The game fuels his imagination, and history helps flush out the details. The game features a small but informative encyclopedia regarding the in-game and historical significance of everything it mentions. Noah (being Noah) isn’t as into “reading” about them as he is “talking” about them.

Lucky for us all, the game will most likely distract Noah well enough to render his global ambitions moot. In homage to Noah’s endless curiosity regarding the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, I have included a link to an excellent wikipedia article about just that.

A few days ago Blizzard announced their next big project: Starcraft 2. I prefer turn-based strategy games over the real-time variety. My brain has trouble tracking all the proverbial “irons in the fire” and those times when my brain is fast enough my fingers often are not. Still, it is a smart move for Blizzard. Ten years after the original release Asia hosts televised Starcraft tournaments–and the popularity on this side of the globe isn’t shabby either. I know I am a bit late for predictions, but I saw this one coming. World of Warcraft if their current cash cow. I expect Blizzard to invest in new content for another 3 years. A “click-n-kill” Diablo game would probably take more subscriptions than an RTS title.

I count the company among the top software developers in the world (gaming or otherwise). Let me quickly review why I feel so strongly about the company. They are committed to releasing and supporting stable code. A small patch for the original Starcraft was released the same week the sequel was announced–10 years after the original release. The patches mostly offer very minor balancing issues, new hardware and some small new features. That is to say, the code is better than 99% of the market, yet Bilizzard doesn’t rest. Contrast this with Ubisoft’s Pools of Radiance which would delete system files when uninstalled without a patch or Bioware’s Neverwinter Nights which included a small portion of the DM features they boasted during production. All through development the developers were trying to pull the DM features into the limelight to avoid comparisons to Baldur’s Gate and Dungeon siege, both of which supported better stories, gameplay and graphics. And yes, I hear all citizens of Azeroth bemoaning the missing hero classes that were “promised” (rather “mentioned”) early in development during World of Warcraft. Clearly these players never had to wade through the unbroken promises of Lionhead’s Peter Molyneux, creator of Fable and Black & White.

Will Wright and Mr. Miyamoto are out to be innovative. Blizzard is just out to be the coolest kid on the block. They have never created a new genre. They simply perfect an existing one: Diablo, Warcraft, and World of Warcraft are prime examples. They emphasize balance more than any other developer I know. They understand graphics are important, but not more important than running smoothly on a normal machine. They do this despite the fact they are often critisized for graphics that don’t squeeze a few extra polygons from the priciest gaming rigs. Best of all, they don’t release crappy games. They pulled the plug on titles like Starcraft: Ghost and Warcraft Adventures: Lord of the Clans. Although I’d like to see what Blizzard would do to the stealth and adventure genres the trust their brand name carries is important. I’d recommend anything they release.

Yesterday the season finale for Lost’s 3rd season. I’ve been escorting Elise and the kids through the first season of Lost. They have yet to complete the first half of season 1. Some story elements are a bit subtle for Noah, but on the whole the kids are at a perfect age for such a vivid adventure. There is just enough edge to make them jump in their seats but not enough to keep them up at night. The setting and plot tickles their imaginations and I believe the characters and conflicts are a notch better than most stories they’ve experienced.

Most shows expose enough of their story to set some expectations in the audience. I expect a super-natural explanation in films like What Lies Beneath and The Sixth Sense, but not in a James Bond film. Robots are sure to move the plot forward in Terminator or Battlestar Galactica, but not Grey’s Anatomy. The Lost writers work to avoid all expectations. Ghosts, robots, clones, psychics, magic, big brother consipracies, nano-technology, new-age mother-earth hoo-doo — I wouldn’t be shocked to find any combination in the storyline, yet I am compelled to follow along to see which are included.

Most stories reveal the main conflict and the scope of the story early on. Early on it is evident the War of the Ring would effect all the inhabitants of Middle Earth. I wouldn’t expect the plot from Back to the Future to explode to that same scale. Lost reveals the scale of the plot slowly.

In both these ways the show reminds me of the best adventure games: Zork, Myst, and Maniac Mansion. The show also has a deeper personal appeal that grabs me. Lost starts as a masochistic survival tale like Lord of the Flies, the original Planet of the Apes and to a lesser extent Survivor. It then adds a general big brother conspiracy feel similar to X-files, 1984 or the original Matrix film. To contrast, I can’t get excited about NBC’s Heroes. The X-men / Wild Cards theme isn’t nearly as exciting.

If you’ve never seen Lost from the start, I recommend watching the first 2 discs of season 1. If the mysteries frustrate you, you’d best find another show. If not, rejoice! ABC has agreed to continue the show until 2010. That means the writers have 6 seasons to tell a proper story, no abrupt cancellations or over extended story lines. If you are concerned about being tied to your TV for the next 3 years, ABC features the 3 most recent episodes on their website, in case you miss a few.

….yes, wikipedia is my one-stop link shop. There may be more in-depth resources but there is no better place to start reading about any topic you have a passing interest in.

The stuff is pretty pricey considering it is mere perfume water. Not being one to be confined to strict instructions I began mixing the ingredients from memory:

A bit of fabric softener

Lots of water

I think MythBusters confirmed that Vodka works wonders on stains and odors

A touch of viniger

A dash of baking soda… Holy crap!

The lessons of countless science fairs was lost on me. The bottle erupted into a geyser of gritty, sweet smelling foam. The kitchen smells great.

I’ve started hunting for honeymoon locals. I’ve narrowed it down to someplace on earth after reading this. It says NASA’s response is “Don’t ask, don’t tell” when asked if any astronauts done the deed in zero G. I’d be the first to get my galactic groove on, but the low blood pressure of zero G means inflates one head and deflates another. That last two things I need are more headaches and less blood in my *ahem* extremities. I suppose I’ll just have to “defy gravity” here on Earth.

Besides, the final frontier is a bit pricey for the Sheppard budget. Maybe my in-laws could rig up something similar to a rocket ride for less money.

…boing-chicka mow mow…

World of Warcraft has over 7 million subscribers (minus 2). After two years Blizzard will soon release the first expansion, The Burning Crusade. Unlike the original game, there will be no open beta and Blizzard is fighting to keep leaked alpha media from reaching the fans. As you might imagine, news like that would score a few hits from the legions of addicts Blizzard has amassed. Today I present you a few links to sites that contain these valuable signs of what is to come. Sprawl’s Scrawl is a great way to brush up on a weeks worth of Warcraft business, development and social news. This particular article focuses on alpha information. WoW Exposed is a blog dedicated to unreleased information about the expansion.

This page includes screen shots from gear that drops in the lowest level instance included in the expansion. Veteran players will notice this easily obtained equipment is very comparable with gear groups of players work for months to obtain. It appears Stamina will be more common on the equipment. Will Blizzard adjust the stats on existing gear? Players debate the merits of working towards this gear over waiting for the expansion.

It 3 days passed before I broke down and bought The Sims 2. The game is a vivid reminder of how addictive the first one was. In the simulation, I bust my tail to save my sim a little extra time so she can finish her painting, call her sister or make WooHoo with new new guy friend in her new hot tub. Through an odd twist of fate, I bust my tail to shave mere minutes of my daily routine in order to squeeze more of The Sims 2 into my day …or night …or early morning.

I best not talk too much about the game lest I may ramble on and on about the drama my sim’s live out. I’ll limit myself to one short antidote. Yesterday Nina snuck out on a date with her sister’s hubby. They visited the mall which is quite an epic journey for a sim. While she was there she decided to invest some of her hard earned money on a new video game. She chose to buy The Sims: Bustin’ Out. My own energy levels began to droop before I had a chance to let her try her new game. (It was also very difficult to get her to leave Dan’s side and head to her own house.) While I changed into my PJs it struck me: my sim will be controlling a simulation. That might be dangerous. I think it may cause a stack overflow in the Matrix. In the words of Keano Reeves, “Whoa.”

Hmn, I did not intend to make this website into a blog/journal. Sometimes the little sidebar is not enough. Sometimes I just gotta write you all en mass. I’m looking into some CGI scripts that will help me manage a blog-like-journal, but don’t nobody hold their breath.

Last night I watched Unsolved Mysteries of World War II Volume 4. It was the only DVD in the series that did not get blasted by reviews from my fellow netflix members. The documentary was not produced very well, but the subject was interesting. Two thirds of the DVD was dedicated to exposing the Nazi party’s cultic roots and the bizarre cult-related secrets hidden in Himmler’s castle. Outside video games, it is difficult to find documentation about the Nazis efforts to create an army of uncontrollable zombies hell-bent on consuming human flesh. Although the documentary did not directly make this claim, I think the viewers got the picture.

As I was returning from the grocery store I saw a beautiful thunderstorm off in the distance. There was just enough light left in the sky to make out the outline of a huge cumulus cloud. The cloud looked flat in the twilight. Each arc of lightning within the cloud would illuminate a small portion of the cloud, giving just that portion of the cloud some depth for a moment. It was so beautiful the handful of people in the Publix parking lot set aside a few minutes to enjoy it before they went on their way.

Things weren’t working out between the I-Opener and me, so I planned to re-auction it on ebay. Before I auction it, I figured I could boost my buyer/seller rating, clean out my closet and make a little more money by listing some old CDs on half.com. For those not aware: half.com & ebay are in cahoots or to be more accurate, ebay owns half.com. What I do on one effect my reputation on the other. My ebay and half.com accounts are one in the same.

So I listed a few dozen CDs, 4 video games, 1 book and a cable modem. In less than 48 hours I have had 4 sales! Hot dog! That is $45 profit! Best of all, today I found a yellow star by my user ID. I think I leveled up! 32 more deals and I make level 3!

Once a year I get an urge to create a nifty little web site and like clockwork, I abandon the site after a month or so. Why can’t I consistently maintain a single site? Maybe I am fickle. Maybe I am not motivated to keep the site up-to-date. Maybe there is really nothing vital on my site to keep up-to-date. If you said ‘all-of-the-above’ give yourself a cookie! I suppose no real harm has come from my negligence. The Internet appears to still be in tact. Hmn, I suppose my site doesn’t play such a vital role in the Information Age.

I have no idea what I plan to post here. I don’t have any artistic talent, odd hobbies or unhealthy obsessions to document. I’ll whip up some content later. Until then, welcome to <strike>chris.sheppard.name</strike>chris.sheppardfamily.name, just another personal website. Enjoy.
