Battlestar a Mormon Allegory?

Glen Larson, the creator and producer of the original series, is a devout Mormon and many of the concepts in both the old and newer series are grounded in Mormon theology. This FAQ points out 7 parallels, many from the original series. The last page of this article on Salon is much more interesting. Look for the sub-title, “What’s this all this confusing religious stuff?” I’m not sure the part of the article I quoted below is firmly grounded in Mormon doctrine, but it sure is interesting:

The Cylons, unlike the humans, are monotheistic and believe in “one true God.” Humanity, in their view, has forsaken God and, thus, sinned. So God directed humanity to create the Cylons. In order to please their God, the Cylons then murdered their creators.

The next two sub-sections in the article also include astute observations. They talk about how Cylons are a young culture. They have evolved from a “unified front” into individuals with independent agendas. It connects their obsession with flesh and Earth and reproduction with the religious commandment, “be fruitful”. And here I was thinking they were written to be oversexed robots to appeal to an undersexed audience.

April Fools Hijinx

April Fools has escalated into an entertaining web event. Blogoscope has a long list. Google seems to dominate it. It appears each department want in on the hijinx. Best of show goes to Youtube, who rickrolled us all. I might had been fooled by this announcement had I not seen it on the list of gags. Blizzard has a handful of funny announcements as well:

Happy April Fools!

10 Geek Gags

Life Hacker heralds April Fools with a list of 10 geek pranks. I’ve attempted something similar to 6 of them through the years. I caused the most trouble when I tricked a co-worker into blasting the phrase “Tickle my fanny and I’ll yelp like a woman” to the entire company using the NET SEND command. It might have been better received had I waited for tensions from the last round of lay offs to die down first. Ho boi.

Guitar Hero

I dunno when I’ll be able to post again. You see, the boys are getting the band back together. Old farts like myself like few things better than sharing our music with the younger generation. I learned from the best, Dana Carvey. Now I must teach my children not just how to hit the notes, but play them with style. We shoot notes from the hip, jump with the rhythm and we work the whammy bar like it was …well, you know. Tonight the kids and I rocked out to Even Flow, Paint it Black, My Name is Jonas and La Grange. I only wish the disc had some Limozeen bonus tracks. My old lady, she isn’t too keen on the release of Guitar Hero 3. She says it keeps me out on the road too long. I think I may have to write her a power ballad. She’s been spending her free time working on a new video game concept, “Back Massage Hero”. You lay a thin game pad on your partner’s back and you have to squeeze and rub certain areas in time with the music. I can’t wait for her to try it out on me. Oh wait, she’s giving me the stink eye. I better go.

…anyone know where I can get some lazer lights for our living room on the cheap?

Con Farm es Sneff?

Maxis will begin to share how it plans to move its largest franchise forward on March 19, when it will begin to release information about The Sims 3. The Sims is a big part of our house. I think we bestowed the game on them in Christmas 2008. It was played long after their other gifts grew old. Madison has since turned to more social endeavors, but Noah still returns for month long Sim binges. He’s purchased nearly all the expansion packs.
